It is with great sadness that Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council learned of the death of Cllr Martin Heywood who passed away on Saturday, 5 September.

Cllr Heywood, 56, had been a Town Councillor since 1995 and served two terms as Town Mayor. He lived in Borehamwood and served the Hillside ward. Martin was also an Borough Councillor since 1995 and served as Mayor from May 2006 to May 2007.

His wife Jean, leader of Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council and also a Hertsmere Borough Councillor, said: "It's still very early days for me and my family and we can't believe that Martin has gone. He was a caring husband, loving father and a man who worked very hard for the local community. In recent years his council work and his ambition to make the areas in which we live safer and happier places was uppermost in his mind and efforts. I know he will be missed by all those who met him but none more so at this time than his family. We have been inundated with messages of support and good wishes. We thank everyone for their kindness at this sad time."

At the Annual Meeting held on 8th May 2008 Cllr. Farida Turner was elected Mayor for the Municipal  Year 2008/09 and Cllr. Pat Strack was elected Deputy Mayor for the Municipal Year 2008/09.
